ABOUT THE PROGRAM

Chamber Music for Children is an educational outreach project for all Fifth-Grade students in the Rapid City Public School System. The project is a collaboration of the Black Hills Chamber Music Society, the Public Schools and several local ensembles. Around twenty-two years ago, Pauline Lunde and Victor Weidensee, members of the Chamber Music Society, founded this youth-centered community outreach project. It remains vibrant today.

The goal of this project is to give students the experience of hearing chamber music, and the opportunity to interact with the musicians, their instruments and the music. Members of four ensembles, vocal, strings, woodwinds and brass share their talent and their joy in this music with the students through interactive performances. The students receive both an educational and entertaining experience, as the ensembles perform music of the baroque, classical, romantic and modern periods. Each year, during March, 15-20 musicians perform forty to fifty concerts for approximately 1,500 students and their teachers. These generous musicians receive an honorarium payment for their time and talent.

Chamber Music for Children also provides an opportunity for these local musicians to perform professionally. The project also gives the groups an incentive to continue performing as ensembles. Many of these musicians perform in other venues in the community.

This project costs the Chamber Music Society around $2,000.00 each year. This cost is all payment to the musicians. The project is paid for with grant awards and contributions from donors who believe the project is a positive experience for the children.

Chamber Music for Children is currently co-chaired by Dr. Michael Mathews and Ms. Rhonda Seaver.
