ABOUT THE PROGRAM

The Children's Home Society began as an orphanage in 1893, and is the oldest human service agency in South Dakota. Since the early 1970's, Black Hills Children's Home has provided residential treatment and education for children 4-13 with emotional and behavioral problems. The environments they come from have not provided encouragement or access to the arts.

Nothing activates the brain like music. Music therapy bolsters attention and the ability to focus. It also reduces hyperactivity and strengthens social skills. In 2007, Music and Art were added to the Children's Home curriculum, thanks to a much celebrated grant. As the grant neared its end, the importance of music and art for these children was very evident. Therapy through music and art were thus included in the Home's mission.

Black Hills Chamber Music Society has the opportunity to bring outside music entertainment and education to the children and staff of the Children's Home. Periodically, one of our concert series ensembles will be able to go to the Children's Home and spend time making music with the children in various ways, thus helping to nourish creativity and self-confidence.

The following is an account, told by an anonymous observer, of how the children were completely captivated by a pianist, and listened intently to the instructions given them. The pianist spent time talking with the children and making them feel comfortable. She explained that they would be acting out a scene from an opera while she played the music. The “rehearsal” was delightful! The children did perform a short opera scene with hand constructed props and partial costumes. Not one difficulty was observed during that brief performance, as the children were focused on the music and what they were to be doing. That opera scene...? JOY!

We are happy to have the opportunity to work with the Black Hills Children's Home as they fulfill their mission of bringing the delight and joy of music to these children.
